Example we have a Pug and really would like to get this Pekingese but if they won't get along we will not even think about it.

You shouldn't have any problems if you let the dogs sort out the
pecking order themselves. They may look like they're trying to kill
each other, but it's all part of them establishing dominance and who's
going to be the leader of the pack. This doesn't mean you shouldn't
supervise, but if you see a lot of growling and snapping, as long as no
one is yelping and no blood is being drawn, it's probably all part of
the pack behavior. Too many people expect dogs to behave like people,
like they're going to shake hands and be friends after meeting. It
would nice if it works that way, but it doesn't. Just give them time,
be patient, and I'm sure you'll be fine. The only thing I would try to
find out is the background of the peke at the shelter. If he was
abused, he may have some problems socializing with not just the other
dog, but you as well, for a little while. This is true of any shelter
dog, not just pekes. That's not to say they won't be a great pet,
though, it's just something to be aware of when you start forming the
bond between you and your dog.
