Can anyone help us in this decision? How are pekes generally with small children? Are they easy to train and can they tolerate small kids?

Pekingese aren't mean dogs, it's really in all the way you train them. If you don't teach them to be mean and don't rough them around they won't get mean(that's what i done with my puppy ) , but if you do they will probably get mean. They can tolerate small kids, because my puppy will be a year this month and and she can handle them/

This is nonsense....if you can train your child how to interact with the dog.....should be no problem. I do know that most dogs do not like small children but pekes are extremely gentle and should not be a problem if the child has been taught to treat the dog respectfully.
