I tired very quickly of this attitude. I would not buy from a pet store again, simply because of the possibility that the puppies are coming from a mill, but Im not sure I would go to a breeder either. I think ill stick to shelters-therefore I can not only help a dog in need, but i can avoid both puppy millers and breeders with large sticks up their...um...hind quarters. I will admit i understand more about puppy milling and breeders since this experiance, and will make my next choice in dog better educated, though i couldnt be happier with the puppy i have now.

I have been learning a lot about pekes in the last year from a great many breeders that have outstanding reputations. When I first solicited their direction in obtaining a peke puppy, I was taken aback - almost no one was interested in selling me one (I misunderstood their communication with me for arrogance). Yes, I did speak with a few breeders which were short with me, but for the most part I learned a great deal from all of them even though I didn't purchase a puppy from them. I persisted in my interest in the breed and now (a year later) understand where these people are coming from. They love these dogs as they do their children and wouldn't sell to me because they didn't know me and hadn't heard of me. As I got to know a few of these breeders, they talked I'm sure, and I think they may trust me enough as a human to maybe one day let me obtain a peke from them. I am glad that I persisted with my endless stream of questions to these breeders because of that. MY POINT OF THIS IS =} -> that none of this experience can compare to what I saw this weekend at a specialty show. There was a sweet little rescue peke there which was bony, with many missing teeth (from malnutrition) and an eye socket which was sewn up because the eye had to be removed. This poor little peke was rescued from a puppy mill; nothing ever quite got the message to me with such impact as this. Even though experienced breeders may seem curt and uninterested in you, their main concern is their dogs, not to make money -- these people already have waiting lists of prospective buyers before they even breed. They were in a way testing me to see if I had the gumtion to stick in there until they knew what type of person I was. EVEN THOUGHT IT IS A NICE THOUGHT TO BELIEVE THAT ALL DOGS IN PET STORES DO NOT COME FROM PUPPY MILLS-IT IS IGNORANT TO THINK SO, SINCE THE REPUTABLE BREEDERS WILL NOT EVEN SELL TO A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL UNLESS THEY KNOW THEM, WHERE DO YOU THINK THEY GET THESE PUPPIES FROM?!!! Every time someone buys an animal from a pet store, they are opening the door for another puppymill purchase from the petstore to fill the last puppy's place. The prior message was absolutely correct. All registered dogs come from a breeder and all have pedigrees, to boot: most pekes have many champions in their pedigree somewhere, this should not be a guarantee that your dog is not from a mill. Your best bet is to ask someone who has been into this for a few decades (A PCA member, for example) if they know of the breeder. I apologize for this long message but I feel compelled to post this as I was in the same boat as you. (I bought my baby from a backyard breeder - and was hunting in pet stores for a peke which would capture my heart that I could bring home and love that day). I now know I must be patient for any future pekes I want to include in my dog family - and will do that, despite how impatient I am. Please don't think my intentions are to be rude or arrogant; I would just like you to know what I have learned and seen. (PS Just a few months back there was a puppymill in my area raided by the county (400 dogs) many of which were pekes). Please love your baby and no matter how reputable breeders may "come off as" to you, don't become discouraged from them - they are the best source for a peke to love. Take Care from Giszmeau and Judy =)!
