She was told by a breeder that most breeders would not sell a peke pup to any child in the family under 7 years old. Can anyone help us in this decision? How are pekes generally with small children? Are they easy to train and can they tolerate small kids?

Pekingese aren't mean dogs, it's really in all the way you train them. If you don't teach them to be mean and don't rough them around they won't get mean(that's what i done with my puppy ) , but if you do they will probably get mean. They can tolerate small kids, because my puppy will be a year this month and and she can handle them/

I find it is not the dogs that need teaching it is how you teach your children to interact with the animal or animals concerned. If you teach a child to be gentle and not to pull its fur etc the dog is fine. usually a healthy relationship develops between a child and a pet so much so that the dog ends up being very protective towards the child. I've had pekes since I was 5, my mother showed me how to handle, stroke, and care for them and there were no problems.
