My vet gave me a suggestion on how to pick up the dog so you don't injure him more. Slide your hand between his front legs and down his chest. If you pick him up the way we normally do ( around the waist), it pulls on his back and causes a lot of pain.

I was also told to put him in a whirlpool bath (This was after 2 days of being completely immobilized.). Fill up a tub so that your dogs feet do not touch the ground. Hold him the way I mentioned above and swirl the water around with your other hand. This will make him exercise his legs without injuring his back more. I did this once a day for a week.
