Most dog foods have feeding instructions on the bag. I recommend
buying a small bag (< 5 lbs) of puppy food such as eukanuba or Waltham's
from PetSmart or PetCare, and just follow the feeding instructions.
When in doubt, ask your vet. Please make sure you use a high quality
food and not supermarket food, and do not feed the pup table scraps.

Also, since you're doing a very common thing (unfortunately, in my
opinion) and giving a puppy as a Christmas present, please remember
that this pup has just been separated from his mother, and is in a
very scary new world. The hustle and bustle at Christmas just adds to
the fear of this puppy. Do your best to give the puppy the proper
attention and care it deserves. Let it slowly adjust to the new
environment, and when it's used to it, then bring family and friends
over to visit. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm preaching, it's just that this time is
very critical to the pup adjusting to its new home. Most of all,
give the new pup lots and lots of love!

Please come back if you have more questions as the pup gets older.
