To begin with get a good puppy book. There are some wonderful things out there.
Then for those wanting to train the dog to go outside.
Take the pup out before and after eating, drinking, playing, sleeping and every 2 hours besides. Keep in a confined room when you can't be watching him constantly. Never "just let the dog out". Go with him. Talk to him about what you want him to do, encourage him, and praise him when he does.
For those wanting to paper train.
Confine to uncarpeted room. Spread papers over entire floor. He will begin to choose to eliminate farthest away from his sleeping and eating area. As he begins to choose one area, begin to pick up one paper at a time, nearest his bed. If he returns to that area to potty, replace the paper and wait a few days. Return the pup to the confined area when you cannot watch him and before and after play.
For both methods, if you are having problems, leash the dog and take him with you from room to room, returning him to the potty area frequently. He shouldn't want to potty while connected to you. Praise him when he potties where you designate.
Be patient. A few training months are worth a lifetime of love and companionship. Good luck.
